The Last Americans

The last Americans will be small and sly.

They will live only behind desks

and their miniature deathbeds will be lined with

Numbers and stocks and servitude to some greater purpose.

The last Americans will be big and brutish.

They will die out among the hopeless dunes

And their graves will go back to nature

What remains and what will become is some greater purpose.

The last American will be a lone survivor.

They will spend their last night watching the sky,

Lit by a beautiful arrangement of other nations’ munitions,

A sky fit for the final day of independence.
